Building a New Life by Remote Control

I may have mentioned that I am living in a campground several hundred miles from the place I am going to be living in the future. (Have I published that blog yet? So many drafts. So many thoughts in my head. Which will I talk with you about first?)

The distance between my current life and the construction of my new home has resulted in my making choices by remote control.

Yes, The Bearded One and I met with the architect over a year ago to make preliminary plans for construction. Have I mentioned that The Bearded One has been walking slowly though dementia for the past ten years? Walking is not a good term for it anymore. His memory is bad but currently the biggest victim of his disorder is his mobility. He walks with a cane on the best of days and with a walker on other days. Stairs or any lengthy walk are major hurdles now.

So, we chose to downsize and now I am choosing finishes. By remote control since I am hundreds of miles away. My daughter (we are building an apartment or ourselves as part of a larger addition on their home) has to take my choices and take care of ordering them or going to stores to find something similar. I am sure it is a pain in the patoot for her but hopefully life will balance it out for her later on.

So far, I have designed my kitchen with Ikea cabinets. Bodbyn gray cabinets.

I have debated flooring for months.  I would love to have hardwood throughout but my contractor assures me I do NOT want hardwood in the kitchen AND aging adds a few extra maintenance issues (nuff said) so I have decided on vinyl plank flooring through the kitchen, living/dining and bedroom.

Old Hickory Nutmeg from Home Depot will be flooring in Kitchen, Living/Dining and Bedroom.

All doorways will be at least 30″ to allow for any future wheelchairs.  The bathroom will have heated tile floors with a shower that is flush with the floor.  A wheelchair accessible vanity that is attractive is still a costly item, the mainstream vanity industry has not caught up with the idea of an aging population…) so to make up for the cost of the vanity ($2000 without granite or sink…) I went with 12 ” porcelain tile for the floor and shower.

Now to choose wall paint color.  I want to stay with the same color throughout the apartment to begin.  Later, things may morph.

Since I am living in a campground, my inspiration came to me during a walk the other day.  Gravel!

My inspiration...gravel.

My inspiration…gravel.

See the grays of the cabinets?  See the golden brown of the floor?  See the colors of the tile?  Now just to choose one of the tan/taupes for the walls…

Sigh.
